Washington, DC – A newly redesigned web site for the Model Minimum Uniform Crash Criteria (MMUCC) voluntary crash data guidelines goes online on Monday, July 26, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). The site gives visitors instant access to the MMUCC data elements, web-based training and background information. “A number of states already have discovered how much the voluntary MMUCC guidelines help them collect crash data that can make their roadways safer,” said Barbara Harsha, Executive Director of GHSA, which helped develop and update MMUCC. “We encourage states that have not yet looked at MMUCC to check out the updated version, and visiting the redesigned web site makes it easy.” First developed in 1998 by a team of traffic records experts, MMUCC is a set of voluntary guidelines for states to collect more accurate, consistent crash data that are more effective for identifying traffic safety problems, establishing goals and performance measures, and monitoring the progress of problems. A panel of experts updated the MMUCC data elements in 2003, and the launch of the redesigned web site completes the process. “One of MMUCC’s biggest strengths is how it was developed and updated with input from professionals in a variety of disciplines from all over the country,” continued Harsha. “All of them share a commitment to saving lives, preventing injuries and making our roadways safer, and that’s really the bottom line with MMUCC.” With the update complete and the web site now online, the panel of experts that developed MMUCC will step up their efforts to sell more states on the value of MMUCC and the flexibility offered by its voluntary guidelines. The MMUCC team encourages states that are updating their crash reporting forms to include the MMUCC data elements and see immediate benefits, and recommends that anyone who shares a stake in highway safety to bookmark www.mmucc.us for an invaluable traffic safety resource. ### The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) is the nonprofit association representing the highway safety offices of states, territories, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Indian Nation. Its members are appointed by their Governors to administer federal and state highway safety funds and implement state highway safety plans.
