Smooth Operator Program Earns National Safety AwardMore Than 33,000 Citations, Arrests Issued During Labor Day CrackdownHARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Along with catching the attention of motorists across the commonwealth, the Smooth Operator program is garnering national accolades. Pennsylvania and its partner states that participate in Smooth Operator have received the Peter K. O'Rourke Special Achievement Award from the Governors Highway Safety Association. The award recognizes notable achievements in the field of highway safety. Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. shared the award. Smooth Operator, which was introduced statewide in Pennsylvania in March, concluded its fourth wave of enforcement in September. During the Sept. 2 - Sept. 15 crackdown, state and local police issued a total of 32,888 citations, including 26,160 for aggressive driving. Roads were selected for enforcement based on statistics that showed a high frequency of aggressive-driving crashes. In addition, 1,349 citations were issued for failure to wear a seat belt and 5,379 citations were issued for other traffic violations. Police also made 580 arrests. A total of 93,035 citations and arrests have been tallied during five weeks of Smooth Operator enforcement this year. PennDOT has invested $2 million in the program to support police training, overtime and equipment such as wireless infrared speed detectors.
