National Highway Safety experts to discuss global road safetyPORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Nationally and internationally known highway safety experts will meet today through Wednesday (September 23-26) in Portland. The annual meeting of the Governors Highway Safety Association is titled "Looking Beyond Our Borders" this year. It will focus on strategies and programs in other nations that have been particularly effective at reducing traffic crashes and fatalities. The international focus of the conference is timely given that the United States road safety record has been slipping compared to other parts of the world. The country has has made much progress, but the United States now ranks 42nd among the 48 countries measured by fatalities per capita.
